Just Start!!!!

So today I had a lovely conversation with a colleague, mentor and friend regarding “the system”.  She’s an amazing person and author of “Mom’s Daily Dose” a great blog that if you haven’t already, should check out!

“The system” is dangerous

We discussed theories (briefly) about societal norms, and the effect these systems such as public school, doing more with less (time), and media is having on our kids.  Self-esteem issues, mental health problems, ADHD, and just a lack of social skills in general.

Homeschooling is our plan

I’m planning to begin homeschooling S. in the fall.  We’re hoping to start this summer to get prepared for scheduling, expectations, and what it’s going to be like.  I’m not going to quit my job just yet – Waiting for this blog to take off!!  🙂 – so much of what she works on will be self-directed and we’ll pow wow to discuss every evening.  If it were up to her, we’d start NOW – but I’m hesitant to jump in!

Who’s teaching who?

I took S. to the orthodontist today so we had the opportunity to discuss some of the plans, fears, and expectations of homeschooling.  She’s such an intelligent child, and although she struggles with some of the daily “stuff” that humans should be doing (like teeth brushing!!) I realized that this kid is WAY smarter than I am – on an intellectual/spiritual level.  She is absolutely amazing!!  And I see where she’s teaching me.  To relax – and question “why” and to not worry so much about what other people think.

What’s the point?

Sometimes life gives us opportunities to review what we believe.  For most of my life I’ve been a “go with the flow” kind of person who worries about other’s opinions, who sabotages relationships, weight loss, and just about any other thing that would allow me to be successful (In who’s eyes??) and seen as a valuable contributor to the planet.  I realize that it’s not my job to tell the children I’ve brought into the world what to do and how, but to have conversations with them.

Just start…

There’s nothing to do but start… I could try to plan for every scenario I can think of – believe me, I’ve tried – but the one I didn’t plan for is the one that would inevitably happen.  Take a lesson from S. like me – just do it – just start.
